Run to your nearest ftp site and get gnutar.  It has options for doing
things like -newer...

If Userbackups are your big concern, look at TarChive on sonata.  It
uses gnutar, and writes log files, and it won't clobber someone elses tape 
left in the drive.

We have an Exabyte 8200, and a HP 35480A DAT.  The exabyte isn't worth
the powder it would take to blow to hell.  The HP is wonderful.  It just 
works, day after day after day.
