Bruce, I did find the vacation and alias man pages, thanks.  Those both mention  
forward, and vacation gives an example--I was looking for a complete  
specification of the .forward syntax.  I mimicked the vacation example for one  
of my users and it wasn't working.  The example doesn't explain, for instance,  
why the backslash: \eric.  (Turns out that's the syntax to make the mail be  
delivered to you also, despite .forwarding.)

Turns out the problem was due to a confusion between local and network-wide
accounts--we put the .forward file on one machine, but his mail was actually  
being handled on a different machine.

Thanks for the replies--one of the e-mail replies clarified the syntax.  Also, 
my apologies for the original request being posted twice--Newsgrazer gave me
an error message that made me think the first attempt hadn't been posted, so
I tried again.
