Having just fetched and compiled and new kermit, I tested 8-bit transfers and found to my delight that they now work. Previously, I could not get them to, and had to resort to slower 7-bit transfers for binary files. With a measured raw "cat" rate of 225 characters per second (2400 bps modem), I get 180 to 190 bytes per second of compressed binary transfer with kermit and the following .kermrc file: set file names literal set file collision overwrite set file type binary set terminal bytesize 8 set parity none set block-check 3 set receive packet-length 900 set send packet-length 900 set window-size 3 The crucial commands here to get the performance are "set parity none" (which is the clue to use 8-bit transfers), set window-size 3, and the set packet-lengths. I have uploaded the compiled kermit to kermit5a.182.tar.Z to the pub/next/submissions directory on sonata.cc.purdue.edu. Mark Adler madler@tybalt.caltech.edu
