I haven't tried to put a drive on the NeXT yet, but I was able to
use this helpful tip from someone at umich.edu: (I didn't get
permission, so I won't give out his name unless he requests that I

This is in response to your post on comp.sys.next.sysadmin on August 1:
We back our NeXT's up to 8mm drives hooked up to Sparc 1's and 1+es (sp?).     
I don't know if Sparc 2's are any different or not.
The command we use is simply:
rsh next -n '/etc/rdump 0usdf 15000 54000 server:/dev/nrst8 / '
    the NeXT				     sparc w/drive



Yes, that actually worked.  The thing that was tripping me up before
was that I was assuming that NeXT rdump was like Sun rdump in that
you can specify any directory.  No, with NeXT rdump, you can only
specify an actual filesystem to be dumped.  Another possible tripup
is that once you have the tape with the NeXT filesystem on it on the
Sun, you must use rrestore from the NeXT to the Sun to read it.
Using SunOS 4.1.2 restore on that tape usually results in a core
dump (robust OS, I know).
