We have been asked to recover an 80 Mb file from a streaming cassette tape (CT-600N). The tape was written using GNU tar 1.10 on a NeXT Station with a Teac MT-2ST/N50 scsi tape drive. The problem is that a short (~10K) tar file was written on the beginning of the tape with an End Of Tape mark immediately after it. This overwrote the first part of the original 80 Mb file. We are trying to recover whatever remains of that original file. Using mt it is impossible to advance the tape past the End Of Tape mark. mt responds: mooney<22> mt -f /dev/rst0 fsf 2 /dev/rst0 fsf 2 failed: I/O error Is there an easy way to make the NeXT read past End Of Tape marks? If that is not possible, is there a way to issue scsi commands from a NeXT Station directly to the device? If it is possible to give direct scsi commands to the tape drive there is a "locate" command in the Teac manual that will advance the tape without attempting to read and hopefully get past the End Of Tape mark. Are there any other suggestions, maybe something obvious that I am overlooking? Please send me your thoughts we are really getting desperate.
