OK, for the record, (almost) everything works as advertised.

I had a few hitches, like needing to modify the .cshrc file on the Sun
which references a variable defined in .login which is not read
during an rsh (but I digress...).

At any rate, I was able to connect an Exabyte drive to a Sun, and backup
up several NeXTs *and* the Sun to one backup tape.

In addition, If you need to restore things, the trick (thanks Karl L
Pung) was to do all the tape positioning with the Sun, then rrestore
from a NeXT when you are reading a NeXT file.

It seems after further investigation that the dump.old DUMP format,
although the man page claims it is compatible with "other vendors",
it is *not* 100% compatible with Sun's DUMP format.

Our Sun has an mt command (asf) which allows you to do "absolute tape
positioning" (basically a rewind followed by a fsf). If you need to
restore file 6 on the tape, you run this command on the Sun:

mt -f /dev/nrst1 asf 6

Then, from your NeXT, you run (as root):

rrestore if sun:/dev/nrst1

So, I now must take back my criticism of NeXT not working with other
vendors to allow a heterogenous network through on backup device on
one computer. (Although the man page still has that nasty
warning...)

Script to follow...

Regrads,

John
