I asked about how to disable the ethernet port. Well this was not realy what I wanted to do. What I wanted to do was suggested by Hardy <hardy@golem.ps.uci.edu> who pointed me to the netmask field of the /etc/hostconfig file. Having set NetInfo to use the default netmask I was unhapy to find that It had supplied none. Inserting the netmask 255.255.255.0 solved the routing problem that I was experiencing and NetInfo even read the change I made in the file (this shouldnt be surprising but I find it so nonetheless). Given my misleading clues about the nature of my problem I was also counselled to remove the broadcasthost from /machines. This had no effect. I suppose because the packets were not being broadcast but had real addresses but masked for the part of the network it thought appropriate. Thank you for the replies.
