With PC's the rule of thumb was shut it down if it's going to be off for more than 16 hours. Drives have much longer MTBF's. And most component failures do occur during the transients of starting up. I have 20 nexts. They run 24 hours/day year in year out. So far we've had one squeeky drive and one dead mouse. (I do use adim to dim screens when not in use however.)
