I really wish 3rd party vendors would take that to heart!
One of the most serious offenders I've seen is Pencom's co-Xist
2.1.1, which feels it has some God-given right to scribble all
over /NextLibrary and /usr/lib. Their "Setup" script was beyond
hope of easy repair, but the only "nonobvious" thing it does is
run ranlib on their libraries, which work just fine installed in
their *proper* place--/usr/local/lib. Actually, I just dropped
^^^^^
symlinks there--and four more for /usr/co-Xist and
/usr/{bin,include,lib}/X11. It has absolutely no business in
/NextAnything.
Let's just say that I'm exceedingly disappointed with Pencom,
and (I know NeXT is reading this) I hope NeXT starts applying
extreme negative pressure to developers whose products take such
unreasonable liberties.
