How about the environmental cost of building a new hard drive?
Not just the energy to forge the metals, but also the freon to
clean the circuit boards? Just as a zeroth order estimate, the
damage to the environment is proportional to the cost, so if
it's cheaper to leave the machine on than to buy a new hard
drive every two years, then it might be better to leave the
machine on.

Might be nice though if you could turn the monochrome monitor
off.

The big energy hog is the printer. If you're not turning your
printer off after use, either automatically or manually (the
command is /usr/etc/nppower off), then you really are needlessly
consuming energy. Not just in keeping the printer hot, but in
the air-conditioning to counter that heat source.
