This has got to be the wierdest thing I've ever seen. We have a small net of 6 machines, and were upgrading one to 3.0, when all of a sudden, for no reason I can see, two of the other machines (running 2.1) lost most or all files which were symbolic links. Needless to say we couldn't reboot, because /etc is a link to private/etc and /etc/mach_init is a link to ../../usr/etc/mach_init, etc, etc, etc, When the dust cleared a day later and we restored the links by hand, booting from optical, it really looks like any file on either machine which was a symbolic link simply disappeared! Can anyone explain this? I've been hacking at unix systems for over ten years and have never seen anything like this. thanks paul lansky paul@princeton.edu
