We have a network setup with six NeXT. Recently, we added on three external hard drives and the system got much slower. The system was set up in such a way that many directories are mounted as file systems. For example, /LocalLibrary /NextDeveloper /NextLibrary/Literature /NextLibrary/Documentation /NextLibrary/References /LocalApps /usr/spool/mail and various /clients are all mounted in this way. Could this contribute to the slow down? Thank you Tom Arnow

Yes. It could. You don't say how your network is configured i.e. what is serving what. I take it that "various /clients" means that you are NetBooting. If so, this is likely your performance problem. NeXT only supports NetBooting under temporary circumstances for performance and security reasons. If you insist on NetBooting, put copious ram in the NetBoot clients. For reasons unrelated to performance, I would recommend establishing /NetApps and /NetLibrary on your fileserver and leaving /LocalApps and /LocalLibrary local.
