How to convert from UUCP mail/news to Internet?

I am currently using UUCP for mail and news. My host name is "prim". I have just set up a SLIP Internet connection with a host called "demon.co.uk". I would like to seamlessly switch over to using the Internet for my mail and news while still being able to _receive_ mail and news queued up on the UUCP link. Does anyone have a simple list of the steps required? I noticed that when I finally established my first SLIP connection some mail appeared in the uucp log addressed to "prim.demon.co.uk!postmaster" - this mail never found it's way to my machines postmaster (root), presumably because it was looking for a hostname "prim.demon.co.uk" instead of "prim"? I don't want to change the hostname and mess up my current uucp link. Thanks for any help, Dave Griffiths

I figured out how to do it eventually (at least for mail). I copied /etc/sendmail/sendmail.subsidiary.cf to /etc/sendmail/sendmail.cf. Seeing a reference to DRmailhost, and having no alias for mailhost, I tried setting this field directly, either to the host name or the Internet address - bad move! Screwed me up for ages. It must be set up with NetInfoManager. NeXT Answers mail.444 describes the steps required (although they must be talking about the 1.0 version of NetInfoManager 'cos it doesn't work quite as described). I also changed the line in sendmail.cf Dj$?m $w.$m $| $w $. to get rid of the spaces. Don't know why, but lots of people seem to do this. I changed the Local Configuration in NetManager exactly as described in Louis Mamakos's SLIP manual. Now mail was going out on the Internet OK, but incoming mail addressed to dave@prim.demon.co.uk disappeared into a black hole. It turned out that this required the creation of a file called /etc/resolv.conf whose contents were: domain demon.co.uk You have to reboot and then everything works OK. Now I'm trying to figure out how to set up news over the Internet. It appears that I have to set up an nntp client. I've got the source for nntp.1.5.11 but the installation looks a lot trickier than that for C-News (anyone out there got a working conf.h?). If anyone's got nntp running over SLIP in batch mode and interfacing to C-News, how about putting a copy on the archives? Dave Griffiths
