Need help configuring sendmail.cf on a small 3.0 network

I'm having trouble setting up mail on a small network (2 machines) running 3.0.

I would like to be able to send mail between the two machines and be able to
send mail from the 2 machines to the outside world. This seems like a fairly
common thing to want to do yet I can't get this to work.

I have set one machine 'astrals' to be the server (mailserver, file server,
netinfo server, etc server). This machine has connected to it a modem through
which I run my UUCP connection provided by Portal Communications. To send mail
to the outside world I use a sendmail.cf that I got from Neuron,Inc. This
works fine when I send mail from astrals.

The client machine, snookems, was set up as a mail client according to the Mail
chapter in the Sys Admin manual. That is, it uses the
sendmail.sharedsubsidiary.cf file.
When set up this way the client can sendmail to the server but not to the
outside world (mail is returned with "Host Unknown" error).

So I tried setting up the server as described in the Sys Admin manual. That
is, it uses sendmail.mailhost.cf. But then neither machine can send to the
outside world. I tried modifying the sendmail.mailhost.cf by changing the two
lines:
	DR mail-relay
	CR mail-relay
to:
	DR portal
	CR portal
But no go. Mail still could not be sent to the outside world.

It seems to me that what I'm trying to do is common enough that this should be
easy. Am I missing something obvious?
