Hey NetWare Gurus,

I just set up a Novell server but access from a NeXT is sooooo slow it is
not usable. Any known problems? Any idiot checks? The automount takes
literally about 30 seconds and subsequent acccesses do not get any better.
All help is greatly appreciated.

The autoNetWareMounter is a dog. The client isn't so bad when you are
doing big reads or writes, but browsing around the NetWare file-system
is painful. It shouldn't be that way.

You could always get Netware NFS. It's fast!!!! So fast, it'll rumble!
Even a TurboNeXT can't keep up without slowing Netware server down. I've
got a SPARC 10 which got chewed up by a 386/33 EISA server, before the
slow-down patch was installed.

Then you could just mount the Netware server..

Maybe, I've done something wrong, but there seems to be some other unpleasant
features too.
I could see, that a connection which is established to a NetWare server remains
active (AND IN LOGGED IN STATE) after I've logged out from my NeXT. Why to hell
this ? I'm not sure if this could be a great security hole!!
The other thing is, if I try to copy some files from a large directory with
many files and directories on it (for example the sys:mail directory with about
1300 subdirectories on it) the performance decreases rapidely and after some
time the connection seems to hung. Each time if this happens, I could not break
the connection from my next, I had to switch to the Netware server console and
to delete the connection.
BTW, I could see the File Viewer could handle such large directories but a
simple 'ls -lR' will also die in such a directory.

Any hints and suggestions are welcome

Yeah, we've got NetWare NFS and NetWare for Macintosh (try mounting
the NetWare server over AppleTalk on your NeXT - it's a trip).
NetWare NFS is pretty expensive, so getting it (if you don't already
have it) just to hook up a bunch if NeXT's is probably not worth it.

NetWare kicks ass!

It's not a security problem, but it is a pain in the ass. Especially
if you are short on connections on your server. I think there is a
problem with the detach/logout functions in the NetWare library (none
of our custom NetWare software on the NeXT could detach and logout).
