Thanks to Robert Nicholson and Andrew Stone (indirectly) for their
suggestions.  They probably solved one of my problems before I could get that
far.

Y'see, I had upgraded my old HD to 3.0 using UpgradePrep.  Then I got a new
HD and did a BuildDisk on it from the old HD.  Figuring I could just copy the
/private/etc directory over (which I did before from my 2.1 system to my
upgraded 3.0 system, at least the flat files) so I didn't have to reinstall
NetInfo.

Well, my inetd.conf file was missing this line, see.

renderd/1      dgram   rpc/udp wait root /usr/prman/rpc.renderd     rpc.renderd

Oooooooooooooooooooops.
