When creating files in the / or /tmp directory, the group assigned to the file is always "wheel" whether or not the user has wheel as the default group. In fact, the file has wheel for the group whether or not the user has wheel in the group list at all! Try this, both as a user who has wheel but not as the default group and as a user who does not have wheel at all: cd /tmp touch foo ls -lag foo Substitue / for /tmp and try it again. The file foo must not exist before you do this. In our case, the group for the file foo is always wheel. It doesn't seem to matter how the file is created - Edit does it, too. This sounds like an OS bug. Is this behaviour limited to system directories? What are the rules that determine group ownership during file creation? Anyone know anything about this? Thanx, Michael -- Michael_Pizolato@afs.com ~18 kyu Q16 NeXTMail appreciated

On a "true" BSD system (e.g. NeXT), new UFS files are created with their parent directory's group regardless of the process' effective group. This differs from System V UNIX. On SunOS 4.x (which is a hybrid of BSD and System V), setting a directory's "setgid" bit selects BSD-style behavior. -=EPS=-
