Non-NeXT Printers and font downloading

This is probably a FAQ my now, but does anyone know how to get NS3.0 to correctly manage font downloading when printing documents? Sure, it now downloads the fonts it needs, but it takes a darn long time to do so. By manually downloading common fonts ahead of time, I should be able to remove the need to download the fonts over and over again with each document. But it seems that NS3.0 doesn;t query the printer first to establish what fonts are already available, and hence, downloads redundantly. This is a major pain, as it turns a 30 second print job into a 5 minute print job each and every time. Any help appreciated.
