Hello,
Has anyine out there tried to run an app remotely via a SLIP
connection (~9600bps) by the -NXHost option??
I assume this is possible if you just try something like:
% DataPhile.app -NXHost <insert temporary IP address here> &
but has anyone tried it?

I have tried to use NXHost over SLIP. It is unusable at 19.2kbps. There seemed to be a lot of data going through, not just a lot of packets, so I don't think CSLIP would have helped much. X11 over SLIP flies by comparison. It takes about a minute for even a simple window to come up. Forget trying to use an inspector. I once tried to change the version number in the Info panel of a program using IB over SLIP. It was so slow I didn't succeed. If you still want to do it, the key is to realize that the Mach network IPC mechanism NXHost seems to use doesn't seem to know about any network interfaces besides the ethernet. So if you don't configure the ethernet at boot time, the netmsgserver doesn't think there's a network to use. But if you have SLIP working with the same IP addresses for the ethernet and the slip interfaces, NXHost works. It's just that it's probably faster to FTP the executable and run it locally. NXHost over SLIP works so badly that there must have been an intentional decision to make it very hard to even try. -- Derek_Beatty@cmu.edu ABD Comp Sci, CMU, 5000 Forbes, Pgh, PA 15213 USA -- Derek_Beatty@cmu.edu ABD Comp Sci, CMU, 5000 Forbes, Pgh, PA 15213 USA

It is very slow. When I tried to use Mail.app over SLIP, it took about 3 minutes for the windows to come up and it another half a minute for the send window to appear and another half a minute for me to type in the addess and see it displayed in the to field. Another 20 seconds to get over to the Subject field. Another half a minute to type in the subject... and then I quit. Dmitri Linde

I agreed with everything else you wrote, but not this. As far as I understand, NXHost is slow because of all the Display PostScript being transmitted from the remote application to your screen. NXHost bears no malice. -- Geoffrey S. Knauth, Marble Associates, Inc. Member BCS-NeXT, LPF gsk@marble.com, (617) 891-5555 work, (617) 547-5247 home Standard Disclaimers
