Does anyone know what the command

fbshow -a -b -e -i "Starting*Local*Services..."

does in the default /etc/rc.local file?? There isn't a man
page for it, it wasn't in the NeXTStep 2.1 /etc/rc.local file,
and it's the little things like this that can drive a
system administrator batty.

Thanks in advance for any info.

This displays the niftly little panel during a non-verbose boot. fbshow -a -b
-e -i invokes a specialized rom monitor routine that provides the "graphical"
boot up (little pictures of spinning disks, ethernet cable, Optical, etc).
The "Starting*Local*Services...." tells the routine to add that text to the
panel. I believe that the * is like a lf/cr...

Right. I've actually used it for my own rc.local scripts. It works
ok, BUT...why don't my rc.local scripts get executed??? I have 2 -
one is 'nppower off' and that's fine. The other is the screensaver
I got of the net long time ago. You're supposed to run it in the
background, like:
  /usr/local/bin/newscreensaver &
Then it dims your screen to whatever /LocalApps/sreensaver.aux@ is
pointing to (I use 'justblack'). The problem is that the above
line never gets invoked from the rc.local file. When I log on,
I can never see newsreensaver running when I use 'ps -aux'.
If I invoke it manually from the shell, it works ok.

What's going on? If any of this rings a bell, please email me.

It produces the startup messages next to the picture of the
spinning hard disk you can see while booting.
It also does the necessary localization of the message (though on my
station it sometimes mixes german with english text).
The '*' mark the line breaks. I don't know the meaning of the options.

Greetings,

Holger Uhr

I would assume it makes the little status window, the one with the spinning
disk that appears as the system boots up, say "Starting Local Services"!

As far as I know, fbshow is used to display messages in the
startup box (spinning disk on power up).

I posted a short summary of this stuff onto comp.sys.next.misc. The
fbshow command does the pretty informative display on the non-verbose
boot up. Don't know about the parameters, but the '*'s are line
breaks. The rc.local I posted to comp.sys.next.misc contains commands
to nppower off and start up adim at boot up.
