Being a newcomer to the NeXT sysadmin game, I'm not sure if I have a handle on the way the swapfile works, especially under NS 3.0. Here's my situation: I noticed that swapfile.front doesn't ever shrink. For instance, it grew large (~8MB) after I did some extensive playing around with BackSpace. I expected it to shrink after I quit BackSpace, but it didn't. Now I don't remember whether swapfile changed size at all (I have it set lowat=16MB). Swapfile.front returned to its small (~2MB) size upon powerdown/powerup, but didn't shrink after a hot boot (Alt-Cmd-*). Can somebody shed some light on what's going on? Swapfiles, like entropy, never shrink spontaneously. Reboot plays the role of Maxwell's demon! -- Hardy ----- Meinhard E. Mayer, Department of Physics, UC Irvine e-mail: hardy@golem.ps.uci.edu (preferred) or MMAYER@UCI.BITNET
