Maybe the sendmail wizards out there can help me with this one. I've got a network of 20 NeXTs. One, named dix, is the mailhost and uses /etc/sendmail/sendmail.mailhost.cf, while the others use the sendmail.sharedsubsidiary.cf. It works fine, but I have one question: If I send mail to the outside world from one of the mail clients, shouldn't it still appear to be from cartley@dix, rather than cartley@"client"? The reason I ask is that the name of the mailhost is likely to be a permanent feature, while some of the clients may be only temporary (due to name changes, network changes, etc.). Therefore, I would prefer that outgoing mail contains the name of the permanent mailhost rather than the client. Also, to successfully send mail to cartley@client, the client needs root access to the /usr/spool/mail directory. Keeping track of root access is a pain in the neck when machines come and go. I suspect that this would be an easy thing to do with the sendmail configuration file. Does anyone know how to do it? Or perhaps you can tell me why this would be a bad idea. All of the machines are running 3.0 and use the new sendmail files. -- Craig Artley cartley@mines.colorado.edu (303) 273-3557 Dept. of Geophysics, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO 80401

Does anyone know how to do it? I've received many requests for a summary of the answers. Here it is: ------- ------- That's it. No one who knows how to do this has shared the answer. I'm still surprised that NeXT doesn't build this into the sendmail.sharedsubsidiary.cf, as it would seem to be the desired default behavior for a mail client. -craig -- Craig Artley cartley@mines.colorado.edu (303) 273-3557 Dept. of Geophysics, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO 80401

HP-UX has a nice feature in its sendmail.cf called "site-hiding" where nodes in a cluster served by a mailhost are hidden from the outside world. It shouild be easy to modifi sendmail.cf so that the from line would list the mailserver. -- Hardy ----- Meinhard E.
