I'm having some problems printing from a unix (mach) shell. When I type : lpr filename (after having created filename with, say ... vi) I can see the job started with 'lpq'. But only two seconds later the job disappears!! I have printers defined in the top (/) netinfo domain. I also have a local (.) netinfo printcap entry. Some of the printer names appear in both. This is all under 3.0. I thought that 'lpr' was supposed to use the first printer it knew about (unless you specify the -P flag). But now I'm totally confused. Is the a default printer that 'lpr' uses? Is it the first printer in the (/) printcap entry, or does it use the first printer in the (.) printcap entry? Or does it use the /etc/printcap file?!! The FM makes no mention of the order in which 'lpr' searches for printers. What I really want to do is print manual pages. I am using the following UNIX command: troff -t -man man_page.1 | lpr -t -Pprinter_name But when I check printer_name (with 'lpq -Pprinter_name') I see nothing!!! printer_name is listed in the printcap of the local (.) ni domain as a remote printer. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance. Sorry if this was too wordy. --Kambiz -- Kambiz Aghaiepour System Administrator
