NS3 fails to find shared Mac folders

So I read the docs that came with my new NeXT. They told me to start
up Appletalk through the "Preferences" icon. This I did. Upon restarting,
I got:

"No response from network configuration server
 Type control-c to continue"

I could not get appletalk to work. What I wanted to do was to mount
files that a Mac on the ethernet had "shared" via ethertalk. I figured this
would work
since the NeXT can be a client to an AppleShare server, and my Mac's,
by sharing their files, had become such servers. I also
wanted to print to an Apple LaserWriter put on the ethernet via
Dayna's EtherPrint Plus.

Eventually I came across a program called "Simple Network Start". I started
this up and finally got the network to go so that I can print to the
aforementioned localtalk printer. Still I am unable to see the other Mac's,
which have sharing turned on. Still I get the error message noted above upon
startup.

1. Is it possible to get rid of this message, yet use ethertalk, but not the
other network features?

2. Is it possible to see the files on the Mac's which have sharing turned on?

Thanks.....John Cary (a NeXT NoVICE).
