Some time ago, I set up UUCP on my system to get news and mail from a  
remote site which I poll regularly. This was not too difficult.

Recently, I tried to do the same for a friend who was running 3.0, as I am  
now. Every time I attempted to send mail from his system, it was  
immediately returned with a "host unknown" message that hinted that  
sendmail was trying to send the message over the nonexistent ethernet  
network. 

At wits end, I finally replaced his newer version of sendmail with my  
older one, which was not overwritten by the 3.0 upgrade. Then, everything  
worked like a charm.

Here are the relevant lines from my sendmail.cf file, which works  
correctly: (actually sendmail.subsidiary, but copied to sendmail.cf as per  
directions)

I have no idea of what these mean, I just copied them from some directions  
I had.

Now, under the sendmail version in 3.0, setting up the (slightly different  
to begin with) sendmail.cf file to look the same way no longer works. I  
don't really like using an old sendmail with a new system; there must have  
been a good reason for changing it! However, I cannot get anything to work  
with the new sendmail and sendmail.cf files.

My questions are:

1. What is the difference between the new and old sendmail?

2. Why doesn't the same alteration of the sendmail.cf file work with the  
new sendmail? I know that the files are a bit different to start with, but  
exactly what is the difference that prevents this setup from working under  
the 3.0 sendmail?
