I can't get photorealistic rendering working

Hi, I have an un-networked NeXT running NeXTSTEP 3.0, and I can't seem
to get the photoreal RenderMan server running. I discovered this by
trying the beta copy of Perspective.app and trying to do a full
rendering of an image. Apparently my machine got configured in such a
way that the rpc.renderd daemon never executes at boot time.

This was confirmed when I checked /private/adm/messages and found this
note:

Oct 1 14:52:38 localhost inetd[284]: renderd/rpc/udp: unknown service

Running `rpcinfo -p' informed me that all the other inetd programs had
been properly executed. My suspicion is that rpc.renderd is designed
to be executed remotely and control processes running on several
systems, and for some reason my computer thinks it is networked or
something and thus doesn't find the rpc.renderd daemon.

This is also possibly confirmed by this message in the N3DKit.rtf
document in /NextLibrary/Documentation/NextDev/ReleaseNotes which
states (near the end):

> If you change the name of your host by editing /etc/hostconfig by

Now I haven't messed with hostconfig, but possibly I screwed up my
netinfo database or something during my rather difficult upgrade
process. Does anyone have some advice on how to make the rendering
service work properly on my system?

Thanks,

Shane

Hi, sorry to follow-up on my own message, but a couple new things have
come to light. First of all, this doesn't seem to be an uncommon
problem. Within an hour of my original posting I had letters from two
other people who also can't get photorealistic RenderMan running on
their machines. One was networked, the other was not. Can someone
help us? There must be several of us with this problem...

Second, I was able to get the rpc.renderd running properly by starting
NetInfoMangler and adding renderd as a rpc client and giving it the
proper number (found in /etc/rpc - it's 200100002). Now when I run
rpcinfo -p it tells me rpc.renderd is running as it should be.
Unfortunately this doesn't change the basic fact that prman can't be
referenced from Perspective.app (or RenderManager.app for that
matter). What's going on???

Finally, I _can_ run prman by hand giving it a .rib file a input. It
will generate (after some time) a file, ri.pic. Is this image file
format documented somewhere? I have The RenderMan Companion, but it
only makes passing reference to this file and doesn't give its format.

Many thanks from myself and the others to anyone who can help us out!

Shane
