longish "loading from disk"

Recently, my system has occasionally displayed the "loading from disk"
message for quite a long time. Why would the time for "loading from disk"
vary - sometimes only a short time and others quite a long time? Advice
appreciated.

Althougth it's been a long time since I booted in "Welcome to
Macintosh" mode, it's probably checking the disk. If the filesystem
isn't properly sync'ed on shutdown, it will check the filesystem on
boot-up...
