Hi everyone,

I am looking for help trying to install ZyXEL U-1496E
modem (still with 2.1 OS). First of all, I have already
tried FAQ, read all documentation including that coming
with OS 3.0, and even sent several messages to an active
participant of modem-discussions on this group, Tom Marchioro,
who helped me with my initial stupid questions (thanks, Tom).
My apologies if these problems have been already discussed
here - I don't have regular access to Internet.

I still can't make this modem work with my NeXT cube (68040).
Here is what I have done.

1. I put the following line into my /etc/remote:

modem|Dial-out on cufa at 9600 baud:\
       :pa=none:dv=/dev/cufa:br#38400:\
        :el=^C^S^Q^U^D:ie=%$:oe=^D:

2. In in /etc/ttys I put

ttyda "/usr/etc/getty D9600" dialup on

3. After reboot, I opened Terminal window and typed "tip modem".
If I do it for the first time after rebooting, I get "connected"
in the window, and after that tip does not react on anything,
whatever I type is not echoed on the screen, and the only way to
get out is to close the window. Now, if I open another window and
type "tip modem", no "connected" is received, and tip suspends again.
I found that instead of rebooting I can remove the lock file from
/usr/spool/uucp/LCK. Then I am getting the "connected" response,
but tip still suspends. Very similar things happen if I try to dial
some number with tip - it always suspends.

Here is what I checked:
1. I checked wiring in the cable - it corresponds exactly
to what is described in the Manual for 68040.
2. I brought the modem back to the store, they connected it to
a PC with some communication software, and the modem worked fine
with no special configuring. The only difference I noticed
was that when they connected the modem to their serial port
and turned it on, the following LED indicators were on:
HS(high speed), DTR, DSR, CTS and EC(error correction).
When I connect the modem to the NeXT, same indicators are on
except DTR.
3. I decided that my serial port might be broken. I was lucky
to find a person with a Cube who was kind enough to try my modem
on his machine. The result was exactly the same as I had on mine.
BTW, he had 3.0 installed.

I don't know what to think and what to try next. Is there anybody
who is using this modem? Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?
I am not going to use the FAX part of the modem. Do I still need
some special driver? Thanks in advance

I'm using a high-speed modem as well, without any problems, only difference may be, that I use some dial-sequences.
Following is an extract of my remote:

[some unneccessary stuff deleted]

dial38400|38400 bps Hayes attributes:\
	:dv=/dev/cufa:br#38400:at=hayes:du:\
	:pa=none:

#
# UNIX system definitions
#
ETHZ|38400 bps dial-out to Kometh:\
	:el=^U^C^R^O^D^S^Q^Z@:oe=^D:\
	:pn=2512002@:\
	:tc=dial38400:

#Nevada BBS: V.32bis & Normal Entry
Nevada|38400 bps dial-out to Nevada-Box:\
	:el=^U^C^R^O^D^S^Q^Z@:oe=^D:\
	:pn=7302913@:\
	:tc=dial38400:

This generates a (almost) smooth connection:

milliways:~> tip ETHZ
connected
7 [bell]

The stupid tip has something against 2 character wide reslut codes (ah yes, U need to turn off all kind of addtional reslut
codes)

Hope, this few things helped anyone
