I have just upgraded to 3.0 and I have noticed lately that there is a
process "mach-task pid -1" that keeps spawning more of itself. For instance
An hour ago we had 7 mach-task's now there are 14...
any idea what might be causing this odd behavior?

Those are zombied processes and are completely unkillable. Kill -KILL (kill
-9) won't touch em either...
During the prerelease phase, we found that many of these zombies were spawned
because of terminal.app by simply opening a terminal window and then closing
it.
Don't really worry about these processes unless there becomes a great number
of them. They only fill up process slots (which there are a limited number
of) but as far as Mach and NeXTSTEP are concerned, these processes don't
exist.
The only current way to reduce the number (note that I think you can't get rid
of all of them because some are spawned in the rc scripts, I think, but I
haven't figured out where) by rebooting the machine...

Well currently I have 218 tasks, and they keep growing rather rapidly, I expect
something quite nasty to happen when the process table fills... Yeesh, how can
NeXT ship a product with such a bug?
