SLIP worked in 3.0, but now it does not anymore

HISTORY: When I installed 3.0 (a clean install), I loaded the 920506 SLIP from its package and restored my files in /usr/dialupip/config from backup. This worked fine and I was able to use SLIP to ftp to the NeXT archives and get the new 920802 SLIP. The latter also installed a correctly functioning set of binaries. I had been successfully using /etc/resolv.conf to point to my SLIP service provider as a nameserver. THE PROBLEM: Now I cannot get any names resolved to their corresponding IP address. ftp always reports <name>: unknown host, even if resolv.conf is set up correctly. (e.g. : ftp> open cs.orst.edu cs.orst.edu: unknown host Since "nameserver.com" (a fictitious nameserver) is in my NetInfo database, I can ftp nameserver or ftp nameserver.com, but even with the SLIP interface up and connected to nameserver.com, I still get "unknown host" for cs.orst.edu, sonata.cc.purdue.edu, etc., when I try to open a connection to them with ftp. My /etc/resolv.conf has "nameserver nameserver.com" in it, so I don't know why it doesn't just get the IP address for cs.orst.edu from there. I may have broken something when I tried to get "named" working with my machine as a slave nameserver to my provider's nameserver (hoping to automatically cache the IP address of the machines I most used and prevent a SLIP connection everytime I send or receive UUCP mail). I had a questionable /etc/named.boot file and was able to get a cache dump from named, but it never worked correctly, so I commented out the following line in my rc.local: #/usr/etc/named >/dev/console 2>&1 I don't see how this could still have effect since I no longer see (named) in the output from pid. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of named can tell me what kind of effects it may have had. I also added a button to my NeXTstep modem manager app which renamed resolv.conf to resolv.conf~ and back without requiring a root-privileged terminal session (but I doubt that I could have broken anything in /etc/resolv.conf with the rename() function!?!). THE QUESTION: Can anyone offer help or clues as to how I can restore working nameserver functionality through /etc/resolv.conf ? I have an OD backup of my entire Release 3.0 Installation which was made before I changed anything, and all of the files on the following paths are identical (i.e. I don't think any of these files were corrupted by the multiple panics that printing under 3.0 has caused): / /usr/etc /usr/ucb /bin /usr/bin /usr/local/bin Ideas? I hate to admit that the answer was also sitting in my backup files. I should have checked, but the resolver syntax seemed too simple to be suspect, and I was putting out a couple of other fires in 3.0 at the same time (see my other posts). I tried to Cancel this article in NewsGrazer (which may have worked for all I know), but I got an alert panel complaining: Cancel failed: /usr/local/bin/inews: cannot shift -- Brian Willoughby Software Design Engineer, BSEE NCSU BrianW@SoundS.WA.com Sound Signal Processing Software and Consulting NeXTmail welcome - NO EMAIL SOLICITATION without prior permission
