What do I need to know?

I'm trying to decide whether I should attempt to configure
sendmail on my NeXT and I would really appreciate your advice. Please
note, I'm not asking _how_ to do this (yet, anyway!) -- I just want to
know what you think is the shortest path I can take to getting mail up
on this machine.
The facts are...
- I'm not very knowledgeable about Unix. Although I'm quite
comfortable with using mail, I don't know much about
administering it.
- I have a single NeXTstation (running 2.2) connected to the
university's ethernet (i.e., not part of a NetInfo network).
The network configuration works fine for ftp, telnet, etc.
- There are other Unix machines on campus (Suns, mainly) that
have sendmail properly configured. There is very little NeXT
expertise here, however, and I'm not really able to draw on
our computing centre for support.
- I have no sendmail documentation. There are references to
sendmail in the Network and System Administration guide, but
only in the context of NetInfo networks. Comments in /etc/
sendmail.mailhost.cf refer to the "Sendmail Installation and
Administration Guide", but I'm not sure where to find it.
So, what is (and where can I find) the basic information I need to
do this? (Just broad strokes here, please. If I do decide to set up
mail, I may need to ask for some detail later. For now I need to know
what I should dig into to figure out as much as I can myself.)
Thanks.
Michael.
