We have just bought a NeXTstation (Turbo color) and installed NeXTStep 3.0 on it. But we don't have a NeXT printer. Instead, we have an Apple LaserWriter attached to a SUN Sparc 2 station. I made arrangements so that we can have access to the printer through network. Then someone gave me a lot of fonts and I can display them on my NeXT console. But when I tried to print them, I can't----even if I save the screen output into normal postscript file. I realized that the printer I have is a postscript printer but it doesn't have enough memory to load in all the fonts. That seems to be the problem. What I don't understand is that, principly, the postscript files can be independent of any font file once it has been created in one place, so is there anyway that I can print those fancy fonts out on a non-NeXT postscript printer without bothering with loading all these fonts into my printer. I will appreciate your help. Zhong-Lin Lu

Is there any way to print a file without downloading the files? The simple answer is: NO. The best thing might be to connect the Apple LaserWriter to the NeXT and let the Suns network onto it. That way, the NeXT will automagically download the fonts you use onto it (while the Suns don't have that feature). The complex answer to the above question is: YES, you could create outline descriptions of your entire page's fonts and execute the PS output as being one giant picture, but this would make the entire page explosively large, larger than downloading the fonts + page description. - Jiro Nakamura Tech Editor / NeXTwatch -- Jiro Nakamura jiro@shaman.com (NeXTmail) NeXTwatch / Technical Editor 76711,542 (CIS) The Shaman Group +1 607 277-1440 (Voice/Fax)
