A quick question: I would like to know whether I should be setting up SLIP or UUCP from my home NeXT to work/school. Here is the situation: NeXT cube at home, gig hard disk, NO OD (I just sold it :-) (I was all set to buy a Floptical only to find out that PLI isn't delivering them.) From 1.1.93 my central goes ISDN digital... I have a 2400 modem and cable. I need to be able to back up one way or another. The host machine at school will most likely be a Sun. From now until the new year, I have to have at the minimum a way to transfer files to/from home. I don't have a floppy, nor will I buy one. I would like to buy a Floptical, if PLI would be finished soon. Mostly these files are .ps output, and some stuff like mail, new apps, etc. The University is setting up a SLIP server, which will also handle UUCP. I have discussed the possibility of setting up a communication with them and they are positive, but we don't know if SLIP or UUCP is most appropriate. The main problem is: 1. slow (2400) modem and 2. I don't have call out possibility (i.e. only incoming calls) so the U has to initiate all connections. I know that a UUCP link would work fine for mail, and it isn't a problem to be called in the middle of the day or in the middle of the night, when I wouldn't otherwise use the phone. But it will be a mess extracting .ps from NeXT mail attatchments (I don't usually use a NeXT at work :-( to print out, and NeXTmail encoding (well, I could of course just uuencode them) new apps (Games! ;-) things to be transferred to my home machine. Also, as I recall from Seebass, Garth, & Snyder (Unix Sys admin bible), one receiving a UUCP connection should offer the service to others, something I can't as long as I'm restricted from dialing out. A moral dilemma. If SLIP is possible, would it be better to set it up? Would it work in the situation I have described? Non NeXT mail e-mailed responses are appreciated. Regards, Thor

I don't necessarily see this as an "either-or" proposition. If I were in your position, I'd be using Telebit WorldBlazers, and there'd be a clear advantage in having both. For those cases where either would suffice (e-mail, batch file transfer), I'd prefer UUCP/TurboPEP's reliability and efficiency. For interactive use, SLIP would be the obvious choice. You have two particular handicaps that make SLIP impractical: a 2400 bps modem, and restricted dialout. There's no reason why you can't or shouldn't run UUCP. It may be worth buying a better/faster modem even with imminent ISDN availability; it takes a long time to transfer anything at 219 cps. -=EPS=-
