how to find out files open and who's got them open

Is there any way of finding out what files are open
and what programs are accessing those files. I have
an optical disk and sometimes it won't eject because there are
files open (the disk is busy). When I worked with vms systems
this facility was part of the operating system. What is keeping
track of file access and how do I find out? Thank you very much.

p.s. please post before Dec. 31 as I'm disappearing to Toronto.

We use a program called, 'lsof', list of open files. It gives us a list
of the other open files on the machine. I suspect using archie might
find it for you, or it might be at nova.cc.purdue.edu in the next
archives.

I will ask my co-systemadmin for where he got it if you can't find it.
