Hi people,
since I have the new NextStep3.0, over all it's very good, I can't do
some things I did bevore.
Especially things I want to do at boot-up time.
In NS2.1 I had entries in the rc.local to play a sound and to power the
printer off. The entries looked something like this:
sndplay /LocalLibrary/Sounds/mysound.snd &
...
nppower off
...
The sound was played during boot process until the loginwindow was
displayed (then interrupted, never mind ...).
The printer was turned off bevor displaying the loginwindow.
In NS3.0 now the sound does not play anymore.
(the path is right, sndplay still exists)
In some cases I was able to turn the printer off, but then after loging
in, the printer did'n turn on when selecting "Print", because it's
status was "unavailable". I had to switch it to private or public
using the PrinterManager.
(not the way I like it)
The sound "mysound" is on a second, extern harddisk.
(it was also in NS2.1)
Can anybody tell me, what changed in the behaviour of the rc.local script
or how can I achieve these things (esp. printer off) in another way.
Thanks a lot for mailing me back.

Peraps under 2.0 either the PATH environement was set somehow by the time rc.local ran or these executables were stored somewhere different, I can't say. But, I would suggest trying to type the whole path out: eg: /usr/bin/runthisapp Etc. Also, there may be some issues involving when disk mounting occurs preventing the sounds from playing. (I can't really say.) -Erik

On the 'old' station and 2.1, 3 seconds were fine, now I need 5 seconds or the printer won't turn off. -- Robert Frank tel. + (061) 321 99 67 Institut fuer Informatik fax + (061) 321 99 15 University of Basel, Switzerland Mittlere Strasse 142 rfc822: frank@ifi.unibas.ch (NeXT mail accepted) CH-4056 Basel X400: S=frank;OU=ifi;O=unibas;P=switch;A=arcom;C=ch

I posted the question about sndplay and nppower off in the rc.local script. I tried out the tips and the solution is in both cases: put a sleep command and then the other. (sleep 10; /usr/bin/sndplay ...) & (sleep 10; /usr/etc/nppower off) & I guess you have to wait until the loginwindow process is correctly started and then al the "services" have their correct behaviour. sndplay and nppower start now after the loginwindow appears. The printer is now "Private" after logging in, and that's what I wanted.
