Configuring uucp dialup/dialout

I know that this has been covered before, but it's not in the FAQ'z and
my archive doesn't cover this group. So I'll ask.

I've got a nextcube running 3.0 that connects to this machine. I currently
have it setup to poll me, but I'd like to poll it. When I followed the config
procedures for tip/uucp I get the message

/dev/cufa busy

This occurs once I change the /etc/ttys entry for the port to 'on' and do
the kill -HUP 1 to restart it. I read the section on arbritration of the
comports and don't see anything wrong. I've tried every kinda config to get
it to work and have had no luck

The entry in the /etc/ttys file is:

ttydfa	"/usr/etc/getty std.19200" dialup on

The entry in the /etc/remote file uses dv=/dev/cufa. This works fine if the
ttys entry is 'off'

The entry in the /etc/uucp/L-devices file is:

DIR cufa unused 19200 direct

So what gives?

TIA
<crs>
