why mouse cursor disappeared?

I'm root of a NeXT color station. This afternoon, every user lost his mouse cursor after login. I didn't find the cause. Then, after 3 hours (I don't know if someone ever changed it), the mouse cursor came back! Is it possible that because I didn't protect something properly (say, chmod some-file to root access only), so somebody played some trick on NeXT ?
