dump and rdump

Hello all,

I'm trying to backup a few Next Machines using rdump on a
sun Sparc 2. My problem is that i do not want to allow the root
user on the Next to make a remote shell on the Sparc. On the other
Sparc machine, i'm using a "dumb" user so basically what i'm doing
on a sparc is

	rsh machine 0uncsdh 54000 6000 backup@machine.with.exabyte /dev/sd0a

and that's working fine... It seems that i cannot do the same
on the Next Machine.

Is there anyone around who can help me?

				Alain

That's your problem.

RTFM "man dump"

In the fine print, it says:
=======
Because of the interworkings of rmt and rdump, it is only
possible to run rdump from one NeXT machine to another.
This is in part due to the fact that the ioctls for the
removable disk differ from the mag tape ioctls available
with rmt, and in part due to the fact that NFS does not
     implement remote device ioctls.
=======

Whatever the excuse, uh, reason, that means you have to buy *two*
backup devices instead of one if you want automated backups in a mixed
environment.

And that really sucks.

Later,

John

Yep. Major hassle. I even tried going around rdump by executing the
following on a Sparc 2 with a tape drive on it:
rsh nextmachine "dump sf 999999 -" | dd of=/dev/nrst0
But no go...the dump is not readable (in fact, restore seems to core
dump when it tries to read it!)
If anyone else gets this to work, let me know...

By the way, our solution to this is to use gnutar on the NeXT piped
through to dd on the local machine. The restores are VERY slow, but they
work. gnutar was necessary because we have filenames that are
upwards of 200 chars long and tar's limit is 100 chars. gnutar has
a different header format and can accept very long filenames.

Eh? I've been dumping next's to sun exabyte for a couple months.
Is there something I need to know??? It seemed to run without errors.
