We're trying to fake Next mail attachments so that non next users can send mail attachments thru their mail programs to next mail users. Specifically, were doing this with the VMS mailer by tarring, compressing then uuencoding the file(s). Looking at normal Next mail attachments we can see a header line as follows: Next-Attachment: .tar.432.AFileName_foo.attach, 29367, 1/1, 40392, 0 We've figured out that the 29367 is the size of the file and that 1/1 probably means the first tarred file in the tar file. Does anyone know what the 40392 and 0 represent in this line? Any other information pertaining to NeXT Mail attachments would be appreciated. -- Don Baker Technical Services Coordinator IU School of Journalism Tel: (812) 855-4918 baker@journalism.indiana.edu

Quite a while ago I wrote a program that lets you send NeXT attachments
from the command line. It acts as a front end to sendmail, just like UCB
Mail. It's a mail sender only though. You type your text (or prepare it in
an editor) as usual, but you can say \attach{filename} to send filename as
an attachment at that point in the file. There's also a little shell
script called mailattach that makes it convenient when all you want to do
is get a bunch of files in the mail.

I can't remember if I figured out the final two numbers (my source is on
floppy right now). I know there was something I couldn't figure out, but I
think it was okay to guess. Anyway, I wasn't sure if there would be any
interest in my program, so I never released it. It's all ready to go
though, so if anyone wants it, let me know. I've tested it on several
flavors of UNIX. For VMess, you're on your own, but it probably wouldn't
be too tough to get something working for it.
