Cant mount / booting single user
#425

After setting up a new external drive, my NeXT no
longer boots without assistance. I've scoured the
sysadmin manual, NextAnswers, the man pages but cant
find any reference to these symptoms.

The problem shows up immediately in the third phase of booting,
at the top of rc.boot, when it attempts to remount the
root file system (which should have been mounted during the Startup phase).

  ############ line from /etc/rc.boot ############
  mount -o remount /	>/dev/console

This mount fails and later problems arise
(e.g. the mount -at 4.3 in /etc/rc has no effect)

  ############ error message ###########
  mount: / not found

After rc.boot completes, the root file system is
mounted read-only and has to be remounted by hand
(naming both the device and mount point).
Only after that and mounting the external disk can
multi-user startup succeed. Even then other steps
may be required (like making /etc/mtab empty and rebooting)

Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong?
I've tried just about everything I can imagine,
and would be very greatful for any help or pointers.

Does the Startup phase read /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab?

I've appended any info that I thought relevant.

############ /etc/fstab ############
/dev/sd0a / 4.3 rw,noquota,noauto 0 1
/dev/sd1a /External_Disk 4.3 rw,noquota 0 2

P.S. At one point the second fstab entry also pointed to /
due to a cut&paste error, long since fixed.

############ hardware ###########
NeXTstation Turbo
internal 240M HD (SCSI id 1)
external 500M HD (SCSI id 2) -- new
currently standalone

############ software ###########
NeXTSTEP 2.2
The internal disk is the boot device.
Several files that should not affect booting have been moved to
the external drive (eg. /LocalApps, /LocalLibrary) and symbolic
links left on the internal drive / point to the new locations.
