Several people have been talking about various alternatives to csh lately, and I was wondering if some kind souls would put some of these at purdue where they would be easy to find and play with. I'd also love to hear from people about their pick for the *best* shell and why. Thanks. -- Mike Ferris mike@lorax.portal.com

I have been using the Korn Shell for 3 year now and have found it to be a satisfactory combination of the best Bourne and CSH features. It gives the user job control, history, intelligent prompts, and full compatibility with the Bourne shell. Also, there is an excellent book by David Korn from Prentice Hall on how to program in the shell. I think AT&T charges an arm and a leg for the source, but there was a company in New York (Aspen??) that had the ksh quite a while ago and ported it to Xenix before it was widely available. Can't say I ever learned csh very well, so my experience is a bit narrow. -- Mark T. Does anyone know an actual ftp address? -- Nik Gervae Software Publications ngervae@next.com
