Original Question In order to reduce uucp communication overhead, and improve throughput, I've been told to increase packet size from 64-byte packets to 256-byte packets. Any suggestions on how to set uucp to accomplish this? Current setup: 040 NeXTcuce <-> Hayes ULTRA 9600 <-> UUNET (T2500) Summary Can't do it with standard UUCP, as offered by NeXT. It seems that packet size is hardcoded in UUCP, and a code change / recompilation may be necessary. Alternatives range from using Taylor & GNU UUCP (source code provided) to using Telebit modems, all of the above allow modifying packet size. Answers / Suggestions monty@proponent.com (Monty Solomon) Replace your uucp software with Taylor uucp. Version 1.03 was just released. Another alternative is to replace your Hayes Ultra with a Telebit. The Telebit has uucp protocol built-in and can pretend to be the other end of the uucp protocol. ian@airs.com (Ian Lance Taylor) So far as I know, you can't do it with the NeXT UUCP. You can do it with my UUCP package, if you like; several people are using it on the NeXT. This is my standard Taylor UUCP blurb. [...] bkr@drdhh.hanse.de (Bjoern Kriews) Forget it with NeXT's standard uucico, it's hardcoded. There may be a chance if you are called but not for outgoing calls. Packetsize is agreed upon in the uucico startup phase. With Taylor-UUCP you might have a chance but I am not sure. jantypas@soft21.s21.com (John Antypas) I use taylor-UUCP (GNU UUCP soon) and use its facilities on both ends. It allows protocol blocks anywhere from 32 to 4096 bytes. shawn@marilyn.marilyn.mn.org (Shawn P. Stanley) This can't be done by setting options. The changes need to be made in the binary file. I thought I saw a posting some time ago on how to do that with the uucico for the SCO Unix HDB, but I don't have a record of it. Thaks to all that responded. -- Roberto NeXTmail: roberto@arrocha.charlotte.nc.us
