PLI 2.88

I have a rather large tree (directory) structure that originated on a DOS
machine. I used tar/compress to move this structure back and forth between
the DOS machine and my NeXT at home. No problems encountered using DOS
formatted disks. Now the structure has grown beyond the capacity of
1.44MB DOS diskettes. So I moved the non-NeXT end from a DOS machine to
an Ultrix (VAX) machine and ftp'd my tarred/compressed structure. No
problem - except it's slow over a 9600 baud modem. So, since the UofA
recently got a PLI 2.88 MB drive and I already had one, I decided to put
the tarred/compressed file on a ED diskette to move the file structure
from my NeXT to another NeXT at the UofA and use ftp to move the .tar.Z
file to the VAX. I copy the .tar.Z file to the ED. I run "sum" against
both files. The results are equal. I eject the ED. I put the ED disk
back in. I run "sum" on the ED file - !!! the results are different -
(the ED file has a much smaller checksum - but the byte count is the
same). Furthermore the file can not be "uncompressed/untarred" to restore
a copy of the original structure. What's up? Any advice? Respond by
e-mail. I will post the solution if any is available.

Don

(p.s. - the structure is about 6MB and tars/compresses to about 1.4MB
right now - but it is growing daily.)
