Macintosh DAT on a NeXT

Hi,

I have a Thirdwave DAT drive for my network backup. I was planning on using the
drive to back up my net (as it always has in the past) and then use a product
called NFS/SHARE from intercon. Corp. to mount the NeXT's NFS volume on my
Macintosh and back it up also. There is a problem in that I need to be the
owner of everything in order to back things up. Since it would be kind of hard
to do that, I decided to use NIS so that I would only have to be a member of the
group and have the files allow group access. Unfortunately, NeXT does not fully
impliment NIS as a server (it works great as a client) so I could not access
multiple groups at the same time. I then wrote a script that would change
/etc/exports to contain "anon=0" for approx 30 seconds (just lo0ng enough to log
in as root from my mac) and then it would change it back to it's semi-secure
state. Guess what, it still logs me in as -2. Oh well.

Now that you have a case history I can tell you what I am going to do. The NeXT
has to be backed up every night night but so does my network. What I would like
to do is just take the DAT and attach it to the NeXT (I have the proper cable),
do a back up, and then hook it back up to my Mac.

I am not very famillar with dump and such things and I don't even know if the
DAT will be recognized by the NeXT.

Could anyone that has experience (or theories) with this sort of thing, please
post a follow-up. Even better would be if you could e-mail me and then I will
post the responses in a summary.

Thank You,

Paul R. Woods
