This is weird, but anyhow: Tip #13 (ominous number!) on the latest and greatest NeXTWorld: Save your money; Don't buy surge suppresors for your NeXT. They are built in. While this is great news. I don't know if I should 'plug direct', I have not seen this documented anywhere else. This marvelous power supply I would imagine is quite a bit more expensive to replace than my ol' ISOBAR. Any thoughts? If this is true, this should be a FAQ, it could save some folks a bit of money. -- Manuel Alberto Ricart alberto@parsec.mixcom.com <NeXTMail Welcome>

Even if it is true, a UPS is worth every penny. Besides not loosing
whatever you are working on at the time, cutting the power can really
screw up the file-system. Many times have I seen fsck eat-up a
file-system after an unexpected crash/panic or power outage. I try
not to reboot the machines since boot-time seems to be the most likely
time for something to get really screwed.

I am still dealing with this surge surpressor issue. Every now and then we'd get brown outs (around 1700hrs) and my hard disc showed signs of death. Anyway, after NeXT immediately replaced my drive (Thanks) the hunt for a suppressor was on. I soon learned that there were things called line conditioners ( to filter out noise) and line regulators. After calling NeXT I was told that the power supply has a fuse in it so if the machine gets overloaded the fuse will blow. Unfortunately, the fuse can't be changed (so I'm told). I concluded that since I would have to buy another power supply anyway it might be better for me to invest in a line regulator. Is this true? maurices
