Adding fonts to the system

How do you add fonts to the system so every user can acess them? I got the
free fonts from cc.orst.edu and uncompressed and untarred them. Then I copied
them into /LocalLibrary/Fonts. I assumed this was all I had to do, but the
fonts didn't show up in any application. I tried putting them in my own
~/Library/Fonts directory, and they showed up for me, but not for anyone else.

So, how do you make fonts universally available?

Thanks.

1. Make sure the font files are world readable.
2. cd to /LocalLibrary/Fonts and run
   buildafmdir

You must also use buildafmdir so the system will know the new fonts
are there. Type 'man buildafmdir' for more info.

I want to thank all the people who responded, both by news and by mail. Many
people suggested I try "buildafmdir /LocalLibrary/Fonts", which did cause them
to show up in the font panel, but as "unusable" fonts. It turns out (thanks to
all of you for this advice) that you then have to run
"cacheAFMData /LocalLibrary/Fonts". When I did this all the fonts showed up
and were usable. (You know, it seems kind of silly that you have to do all
this just to put a new font in /LocalLibrary, when it's done automatically for
certain other directories.)
