font install query

I am trying to install a new font and running into a mismatch
between the NeXT documentation and the Adobe deliverables.

The first step requires an "outline font" file; by examining
the existing ones I see these are PostScript files. The other two
steps are "prebuild" and "screenafm" both taking "a set of screen
bitmap files" which are supposed to be Adobe's "Character Bitmap
Distribution Format (CBDF)."

What I have is an Adobe font package sold for a PC, and on the
diskettes are outline fonts in BINARY with the file
suffixes ".pfb"; and screen bitmap files which are also
binary with suffixes ".afb".

By sheer chance I have a program that converts a .pfb file
into an editable PostScript file that looks *pretty*
much like the existing ones ("psdl" from the Eroff
package). But the .afb files are unacceptable to
"prebuild" and "screenafm" So: Is there any way to get
from an Adobe ".afb" file to a "CBDF" file? Or do I have to
order this package all over again?

Reposting because it seems this fascinatin question didn't
escape the local machine...

Have: Adobe font package for PC, containing binary screen files
with suffix ".afb".

Want: to install these on NeXT using "prebuild" and "screenafm"
commands, but these want "Adobe Character Bitmap Distribution
Format (CBDF)" files, suffix .cbdf?

Question: can I get from the former to the latter, or do I
need to re-buy this font in another format, or what?

Thanks for any comments,
