What the heck is a "magic number"?

I have reported this problem to the beta bug mailing list, but other than an acknowledgement, I received no reply. Now that 3.0 is out, (but I don't yet have it), I need some net advice on what to do. I absolutely have to get some floppies made. I insert a brand new Toshiba PMF-2ED "4mb" floppy into my PLI SuperFloppy 2.88 SCSI drive. It correctly reports that it is unreadable, and I select "initialize". According to the console, the formatting works ok, but when newfs is run, it reports this: ... creating new filesystem on /dev/rsd1a /usr/etc/newfs -n -v /dev/rsd1a setting optimization for space with minfree less than 10 /etc/mkfs /dev/rsd1a 2784 18 2 8192 1024 16 0 5 2048 s Warning: 24 sector(s) in last cylinder unallocated /dev/rsd1a: 2784 sectors in 78 cylinders of 2 tracks, 18 sectors 2.9Mb in 5 cyl groups (16 c/g, 0.59Mb/g, 192 i/g) super-block backups (for fsck -b#) at: 16, 616, 1168, 1768, 2320, cg 0: bad magic number /usr/etc/newfs /dev/rsd1a failed (status 1) This "cg 0: bad magic number" is a problem. I have tried doing all most of the initializing manually, but I always get a "bad magic number" report before failure. Now I have 3 questions: 1. Has anyone else had this problem on 3.0PR2 (or PR1)? 2. Is there anything else I can try? 3. What the hell is the magic number, anyway? Thanks in advance. --J Gregory
