File Corruption

We are running a 4.1 server (P90 /w 48M of ram) and are experienceing
file corruption. We are not using file compression at the moment.

Server
P90 w/ 48M
2 3C509 Combo cards
1 Adaptec 2940 PCI SCSI-2 controller
1 seagate barracuda 4.0G scsi drive
1 micropolis scsi 1or2? drive

These files have gone bad sometimes in a matter of minutes after saving
or days. People can not open the files(in excel or word) On the console
the server does not say the the files are corrupt, but the programs will
not open these files.

Files are going bad on both disks, so I believe that the physical disks are
ok.

We have thought about: getting another "NOVELL CERTIFIED" server, getting
another PCI scsi controller(one drive / controller). getting another hard
disk to replace to older 1.7G micropolis drive.

any ideas appricated.

Troy

You have a P90 server and yet are using an ISA NIC that uses PIO to
tranfer information. You may want into look into another NIC.

It seems like you have 5.7 gigs worth of HD space. Don' know how much
is being used, but 48megs is a bit on the skimpy side, to put it mildly.
of course since you are using 4.1, it alleviates the problem a bit but
still...... more memory should be HIGH on the next wish list.

MAke sure that you ahve the latest adaptec drivers (ftp.adaptec.com).
Also, make sure that your parity is enabled in the scsi setup.

Are you using any switches when loading your adaptec *.DSK nlms?

Make sure you've applied all the latest patches for NW41, and that you have
the latest drivers for your NICs and drive controllers. I've seem these type
of problems before caused by old or incorrect NIC drivers.

Ahhh yes, another good point.
Make sure you're loading the adaptec drivers with "io_combine=1" and
"above16=y" parameters.

Good point on the memory too.

Someone at our Law School had the same problem. It turned out to be
bad memory causing file corruption over a number of hours. Check the
memory!!

From what I understand...The way Novell caches things in memory, if the
memory is bad or is dysfunctional, watch out...
