I have recently hobbled together a new version of AS32K for MINIX. I've fixed a couple of bugs (undoubtedly added others) and I've added several new features including: 1) include files 2) conditional assembly 3) several new directives including .proc/.endp, .var (not exactly NS syntax), .global, .import, .export (changed), and more. 4) the assembler now complains if you attempt to use the immediate addressing mode where it's not allowed (e.g., as a destination). 5) support for structures and enumerated data types. 6) a line continuation character which allows a statement to span lines. 7) somewhat faster assembly times 8) plus more! caveats: This program is intended for assembly language programmers. It is not intended as a replacement for as (bruce's original assembler) or gas. Indeed, many old source files will *not* assemble under "asm". Furthermore, it will not properly assemble the output of gcc. Don't throw away as, you'll still need it to assemble gcc output. Likewise, if you don't write in assembly language, you'll not have much need for this program. I haven't tested the program that much. There are some known defects (but easy to fix and/or work around). I'll announce new releases as I post them. Where: You can get a copy via anonymous ftp from cs.ucr.edu (if I'm not mistaken). If you're nice to me, I could mail you a uuencoded version of the file. Once you log in to cs.ucr.edu, switch to the pub directory (if you're not there already). Inside pub is a directory called "PC" (note the upper case). Inside that directory is the "pc532dir" directory. In there is "basm.taz", which is really basm.tar.Z, named basm.taz for the benefit of MS-DOS users. Basm.taz contains as (the object for Bruce's original assembler, necessary to assemble the source files), asm (the object code for my version) plus all the source files. Unlike previous versions of this assembler, this code is not particularly port- able. In particular, portions of it are written in NS32532 code. It should compile/assemble and run fine on any 32000 machine supporting bruce's assembler (though you may need a different as/asm if you're not running MINIX). It will not, however, run under MS-DOS. Good luck. Please send all messages, etc., to: rhyde@cs.ucr.edu
